William Carew is a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Stellenbosch in Cape Town, South Africa, pursuing doctoral studies on Development Planning and Public Administration and has a Master’s Degree in Strategic Management from the University of Derby in the UK. He has more than 20 years of International Development experience in International and local NGOs in Sierra Leone, Kenya, Ghana, Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand, Ivory Coast, Ethiopia, and presently Zambia. Apart from just working for the AU as Head of the ECOSOCC Secretariat, he has a deep understanding of high-level setup and operationalization of the ECOSOCC Secretariat, and currently leading a 27-man team in the implementation of related action-plans, programs, and activities of the Secretariat and those of sectorial cluster committees of ECOSOCC.
William has served in other senior management positions for programs in the different countries he has worked, and his experiences rotate around leadership, project planning, coordination, management, and Program Development including, coaching and mentoring, training and Development, M&E of program activities, networking with Government Ministries and national bodies among others. In the past, he has coordinated and supported different projects and programs at both national and international levels while at the African Development Bank in Abidjan, Action Aid International in Ghana, World Vision International in South East Asia covering three Countries Cambodia, Vietnam, and Thailand and International Planned Parenthood Federation Africa Regional Office in Kenya among others.
Working at AFDB, he provided technical leadership of AFDB’s programs and substantive advice to all stakeholders but also was at the forefront of coordinating and following up with the different donor agencies involved in the joint Programme progresses. At the World Vision International Asia, he was the Senior Technical lead in the setup of the LIFT project, a 10-million USD Livelihoods and Food Security Trust Fund project in the Mekong region funded and supported by the ANCP/DFAT Australian government for implementation of a more comprehensive civil society engagement program in the three countries in the Mekong Region. i.e., Cambodia., Thailand, and Vietnam. With Actionaid Ghana, William supported in Programme designing and ensuring capacity building needs of AAG and its partners grounding HRBA into Country Strategic program priorities of AAG.
In addition, William has developed strong advisory, leadership, and organizational skills, and has demonstrated he can operate effectively in a multicultural environment at all levels.
